Kentmere had small wool mills all along the Kent river with sheep on the fells. Traces of

the mills survive and sheep farming is still here on our traditional farm at Kentmere Farm Pods. There are still remains of the mills in the valley along with Potash kilns where braken was burnt to be used to help cleaning the fleeces.... Kendal was a famous wool town and the photo above shows a page from the Kendal (Crewdson) pattern book, which had samples of many different woven fabrics available for purchase in the 1800's. The cloth was woven, fulled (felted) and then stretched out on tenterhooks (metal frames with 'teeth') outside in the fields in and around Kendal. The expression 'on tenterhooks' originates from these and the hope for fine, dry weather to dry the cloth!. It must have looked stunning.with yards of brightly coloured fabric suspended in lines. Discover more at the Kendal Museum or the Council Offices that hold the pattern book in nearby Kendal.

This blog post about Kentmere Valley is really interesting. The history of the wool mills and how cloth was dried on tenterhooks is fascinating. Speaking of fascinating subjects, if anyone is looking for help with writing. I recommend checking out nursing essay writers in London. They can provide great support for those studying nursing.
